Yamaguchi Susumu (山口益)

Susumu YAMAGUCHI (山口 益, January 27, 1895 - October 21, 1976) was a Buddhist scholar and the former president of Otani University. He was born in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture.

Career

From 1927 to 1928, he stayed in France to study Sanskrit and Tibetan. He studied the literature such as the Tibetan Tripitaka, Mahayana Buddhism scriptures, and others. He assumed the post of a professor in Otani University in 1933, and he served as the president of Otani University from 1950 to 1958, and then he was appointed as a professor emeritus. Between 1955 and 1961, he facsimiled "Beijing-version Tibetan Tripitaka"and published it by Suzuki Learning Foundation, and he advocated 'Tibetan learning of Buddhism' to study Mahayana Buddhism in India using Tibetan literature. He was also appointed as a professor of Kyoto Sangyo University. In 1962, he was awarded Shiju hosho (Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon), and in 1964, he was selected for Bunkakorosha (Person of Cultural Merits). In 1965, he was admitted to be a member of Nippon Gakushi-in (the Japan Academy). In 1972, he was appointed as the director of the institute for Shinshu sect religious doctrines of Otani school of Shinshu sect.
